Cancer Fighting Foods

The top ten recommended foods are as follows:

  1. Red wine (in moderation)
  2. Vegetables from the cabbage or mustard family
  3. Green tea
  4. Foods that contain vitamin D, such as fish, eggs, fortified cereals
  5. Foods that contain vitamin B along with folate, such as whole-grained and enriched-grain products
  6. Dark green vegetables
  7. Ginger and turmeric
  8. Beans and lentils
  9. Dark chocolate containing 70% cacao, preferably higher
  10. Berries


  1. Wine, particularly red wine, has a high concentration of resveratrol, which is derived from the skin of grapes. Resveratrol is a natural plant compound that contains antioxidant and inflammatory properties.  Moderate drinking of red wine has also long been known to reduce the risk of heart disease.
  2. Vegetables from the cabbage or mustard families, such as broccoli, kale, and collards are also suggested.  The recommendation is that you not overcook the vegetables and chew them well as that seems to help release the cancer-fighting properties of the food.
  3. Drinking green tea, either hot or cold, has been found to slow cancer growth.
  4. Eating dark green vegetables such as spinach, which is packed with antioxidants, is helpful.
  5. Consuming beans and lentils can slow or prevent damage to DNA.
  6. Berries contain chemicals which can inhibit tumor growth. Try adding a variety of berries to your diet.
  7. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate containing 70% cacao, has a high level of antioxidants and appears to be a protection against heart disease and cancer.
  8. Foods containing vitamin D, such as eggs, mushrooms, catfish, salmon, sardines and mackerel, seem to interfere with cancer growth.  Taking a vitamin D supplement works as well.
  9. Adding ginger or turmeric to your food is advised, as lab tests have shown that these spices can slow cancer growth.
  10.  The vitamin B family, including folate, has been found to have cancer preventing propertiesSample foods that contain vitamin B are liver, almonds, potatoes, and whole grain breads.

November 2014 Cancer Demystified – Caregivers

The month of November has been designated as National Caregiver Month, the month to remember the family and friends that take care of the sick and elderly.  In the United States, 4 out of 10 adults are caring for ill family members. The percentage of caregivers has increased 10% in the last 3 years.  Typically caregivers range in age from 30 to 64, but of course whole families tend to be caregivers of their loved ones.

Dealing with the crisis of cancer in someone you love can be very difficult.  During this stressful time you may worry about the uncertain future that lies ahead, difficult decisions that must be made, financial worries, and changes in lifestyle. Depression is actually very common among caregivers and can impact one’s ability to care for their loved one.  Early signs of depression can include: feeling easily agitated, disturbed sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, fatigue or loss of energy, and changes in appetite.

The American Cancer Society provides suggestions for caregivers on how to reduce stress and deal with the caregiving struggles.

  1. Ask for help from other family and friends.
  2. Exercise at least 2 to 3 times a week.
  3. Eat a healthy diet.
  4. At least once a week, give yourself some personal time.
  5. Try to visit socially with other friends.
  6. Ask for help from your medical professionals.
  7. Set priorities and manage your time.  Decide which tasks can wait.
